Position:  elected to four year terms

The County Sheriff along with the County Attorney are chiefly responsible for enforcement of laws.  The county maintains a jail which the County Sheriff supervises.  Some of the duties of the County Sheriff are as follows:

  • Summon grand and petit jurors
  • Principal peace officer in the county
  • Execute and return all writs and other legal processes issued to him by lawful authorities
  • Custodian of the county jail and is responsible for all prisoners committed to him until discharged by law
  • Upon commitment from the Clerk of District Court, transport convicts to the penitentiary and patients to the state hospitals for the insane
  • Patrol all roads in the county
  • Assist other law enforcement agencies

This month in What’s New in County 22, I would like to explain a new procedure we are implementing at the sheriff’s office concerning Carrying Concealed Weapon permits.  When you come in to get your permit there is an application you need to fill out, and we need a copy of your driver’s license.  Once that is complete we will run a criminal history check and mail the permit back to you.  This could take anywhere from one to three weeks depending on different circumstances and how busy the administrative assistants are.  We will be offering the photo ID’s for the Clayton County weapon permits on Thursdays from 3pm to 6pm.  If this absolutely does not work, you may contact me and I will try to make different arrangements.  In the past we would try to accommodate everyone that came in and did the photo ID’s right away.  Due to the increase in the number of applicants, the procedure we do now is just not working.  For one, the dispatchers have to drop everything they are doing to run the criminal history.  Then one of the three of us that know how to run the ID machine has to drop everything we are doing to make the photo ID.  This is a problem when we are busy with other more important tasks. It would just work better for all of us to do it the same day and time every week.  If I feel there is a need for different time slots, I might offer one at night or a time on a weekend, but I would advertise that if I did.

Is anyone tired of winter yet?  I will be the first to raise my hand.  Every weekend it seems like we are getting snow.  It seems to be cloudy every other day which in my opinion has put some people a little “on edge” as we anticipate spring coming.  I’ve heard a lot of people talking about the gravel roads being terrible with ruts from the thawing and freezing.  We generally go through this every spring and I don’t believe there is a lot the county road department can do until spring decides to get here.  One thing we need to remember is that Clayton County is the third largest county in the state, but is only ranked around 49th for revenue income out of 99 counties.  The Board of Supervisors have also enacted a 90 day road embargo for the following roads beginning March 13th, 2013:

On March 27, 2013 the Clayton County Law Enforcement Association (CCLEA) has announced Deputy Shawn Boeke as the 2012 Clayton County Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.  The announcement follows the 2012 decision by CCLEA members to establish the annual award.  All nominations for the award come from peers who work within Clayton County.

If you can tell by the news releases, the office has been extremely busy this last month.  Although I cannot go into detail into an on-going investigation or incident, I would like to say I am extremely proud of the department for the work that they do.  It is comforting to know that regardless of what type of event or situation arises, I can rest easy knowing that it will be handled correctly, professionally, and thoroughly and I am talking about dispatch and deputies.  I feel we have a great team working here and you should be proud of the work they do.
