The deadline for new or changed voter pre-registration in this election is Saturday, May 26, 2012, at 5:00 PM.  The County Auditor's Office will be open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM that day to register voters in addition to the regular hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.  You may change your party affiliation at the polls on Election Day.  Voter registration forms are available in the County Auditor‘s Office or on this website .  All pre-registrations forms must be returned to the County Auditor's Office by 5:00 PM on May 26, 2012.

In January 2008, Iowa law was adopted to allow eligible persons the right to register to vote and cast a ballot on Election Day.  It allows more convenience, but comes with some responsibilities.  Voters must go to their correct precinct polling place and be able to provide proof of both their identity and residency at the polls through the use of authorized documents provided by the voter, such as an unexpired driver’s license with the voter’s correct address on it.  An unexpired driver’s license with an incorrect address would also require a document proving residency such as a utility billing with an address other than a post office box. Because of these requirements, I am requesting eligible voters still make every attempt to register by mail or in person at the Auditor’s Office prior to the close of pre-registration at 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 26, 2012.

Any voter who is physically unable to enter a polling place has the right to vote in the voter's vehicle.  All polling places are handicap accessible. Physically disabled voters may also vote by absentee ballot prior to Election Day by a completed request form for an absentee ballot of the party of their preference sent through the mail or voting in person at the County Auditor's Office located in the Courthouse in Elkader.

Sample ballots for each party can be found on this site. Clayton County is divided by Iowa House District 55 and 56.  The entire county is in House District 56 except Boardman-Highland and Marion Precincts are in House District 55.  The correct House District will appear on your ballot. The law requires printing the first rotation ballot which contains House District 55.  The portion of the ballot for House District 56 is also published for informational purposes. Absentee ballots are available at the County Auditor's Office.  You may request an absentee ballot through the mail by sending an absentee ballot request form declaring which party ballot you are requesting and containing the voter's signature to: Clayton County Auditor; PO Box 416; Elkader, IA 52043.  You may also vote in person at the County Auditor's Office prior to Election Day.  In addition to regular hours, the County Auditor's Office will be open Saturday, May 26 and June 2, 2012, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM for the purpose of absentee voting.
